Every math teacher has heard it, usually around Grade 7, usually from a student who was fine with math two years earlier. It gets treated as an attitude problem. It isn't. It's the most honest piece of curriculum feedback a twelve-year-old can give, and for decades the materials on their desks have had no answer to it.
Here's what those materials teach, whatever the standards say they teach. A static worksheet with twenty disconnected problems teaches answer-getting: find the number, circle it, move on, never find out why it was wrong until Thursday. Abstraction with no stakes teaches that math is a school subject rather than a way of operating in the world. And a red-penned page returned three days later teaches that feedback arrives after thinking ends, which is exactly when it can no longer help.
The results are national and they are not subtle. Math scores on national assessments sit at their lowest point in decades, and the steepest damage is in exactly our grades, where students quietly sort themselves into math people and everyone else. That sorting is the real cost, because it happens right before algebra, and algebra is the gate to nearly every quantitative path a student might ever want to walk.
None of this is a teaching failure. Teachers did not choose static materials; they inherited them, along with the hours of grading those materials demand, hours that come directly out of the time a teacher could spend with the kid who's stuck. The failure is in the format. So the format is what we set out to fix.

And because grading is automatic, teachers get those hours back for actual teaching.
This generation will make more quantitative decisions than any before it, with more information and less certainty. What we teach them to do with numbers in Grades 6 to 8 shapes what they can do for the rest of their lives.
Budgets, loans, subscriptions, percentages that compound quietly. The student who has priced a road trip and balanced a build budget at thirteen meets those decisions later with instincts, not anxiety.
They will be shown charts, samples, and claims every day of their adult lives, many designed to mislead. A student who has gathered data, questioned a sample, and defended a conclusion knows what an honest number looks like. That is citizenship, taught in math class.
Tools will compute for them. What tools won’t do is decide what’s worth computing, judge whether an answer makes sense, or take responsibility for the decision. Those are exactly the muscles real-world math builds and drill sheets don’t.
Algebra readiness gates the STEM pathways, and confidence gates algebra. A student who leaves Grade 8 believing math is for them keeps every door open. That belief is built, or lost, in the years we serve.
